PS4 Game Expecting to be a “free-to-play”
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has informed Game Informer the company is working on a “free-to-play type game” for the PlayStation 4. Free-to-play has been one of the features that has been mentioned in the past. It turn out this was a part of Sony’s plan for the PS4. This will bring alot of variety to the publisher.
Because it's receiving money from Sony through its "Pub Fund" initiative, it means that the Unreal Engine 3-powered shooter will be a console-exclusive on PS4 for at least some time. For the move to console, developer Zombie Studios will be self-publishing the game, with rights purchased back from publisher Perfect World Entertainment.
The free-to-play FPS was released on PC in April last year and is developed by Zombie Studios, the same group that developed Special Forces Team X, Blacklight Tango Down and, um, the Saw games.
Yoshida said: “We are developing a free-to-play type of game, but we haven’t announced it yet. We don’t have any subscription-based games in development, but we are not crossing out any type of game; if it makes sense for a particular project, we’ll look at adopting different models. We are open for any types of models. Overall, we are increasing investment in the digital side of development, either through digital titles like Journey that we’ve been doing, but also trying to add more service-based models to our games going forward, like DLCs or additional features post launch.”
Blacklight Retribution will be free-to-play on PS 4 as well. No release date has been set.
